What can this treatment possibly do?
This treatment may help to reduce the pore size on the facial skin, which addresses the problem of enlarged or dilated pores usually considered as an aspect of photoaging.
Years of exposure to the sun causes significant changes in the skin which clinically manifest as brown spots, freckles, wrinkles, textural changes and the enlargement of facial pores size.
It is found that there is a significant correlation among pore size and sebum level, sex, age and hormonal factors in women. Among the independent variables, sebum level was the significant factor that correlated with pore size. Therefore, medical laser treatment focused on reducing sebum production along with dermal remodelling may be beneficial in decreasing enlarged pore size.
What medical technology or device does this treatment utilise and how it is done?
This treatment involves the use of medical laser, and depending on the situation, may be used with or without the application of topical carbon suspension lotion on the skin as a photo enhancer.
Though the exact mechanism of the effect of medical laser on pore size is not clear, it is assumed that the mechanism of the medical laser itself is known to increase collagen deposition in the papillary and upper reticular dermis.
It can be deduced that dermal collagen deposition in the perifollicular area may be responsible for the reduction in the size of the pores. It is also speculated that the direct effect of the laser on the sebaceous gland may be accountable for the long-term maintenance of reduced pore size and sebum level.
What are the likely results? Any side effects or downtime?
The results of the medical laser treatment with and without the application of topical carbon suspension lotion on the skin is generally very effective overall to aid the reduction of facial pore size. It tends to show a significant reduction of pore size in majority of patients.
The results show that the use of medical laser is effective in reducing pore size and sebum level. The pore size and sebum level remained decreased until 8 weeks after the last treatment.
Slight facial redness may be seen after the treatment, but these resolve within a week, and were so mild that they did not interfere with everyday lives.
