Hair Removal with Permanent Grade IPL
What can this treatment possibly do?
This treatment uses IPL light to remove unwanted body hair.
What medical technology or device does this treatment utilise and how it is done?
We use a medical grade IPL system for hair removal.
Hair removal is accomplished at wavelengths absorbed by melanin in the 600 to 1100 nm range, using pulse durations ranging from about 1 to 200 ms.
IPLs are used to photothermally target melanin in the hair follicle. Overall, the goal is to irreversibly damage pigmented hair follicles without significant damage to the overlying pigmented skin epidermis.
In addition, permanent hair reduction requires destruction of stem cells in the outer root sheath of the follicle, necessitating even longer pulse durations to allow for propagation of heat from the pigmented hair shaft to the nonpigmented stem cells.
As a result, 1 to 100 ms IPL pulses are needed for permanent hair reduction. Shorter pulse durations are better for thinner, finer hairs.
Interestingly, to date, no laser or IPL system is able to remove white hair.
What are the likely results? Any side effects or downtime?
Permanent Hair removal is the desired outcome. The most reliable therapeutic endpoint for permanent IPL hair reduction is perifollicular Redness (erythema) and mild swelling (edema) developing within a few minutes after exposure. This endpoint corresponds to an eosinophilic inflammatory reaction associated with injury to the hair follicle. Depending on the factual scenario, repeated treatment sessions are required for permanent hair removal.
Although there may be vaporization or charring of the visible hair shafts, there should be no charring, blistering, crusting, or ulceration of the skin.
