Fat Freezing
Cryolipoysis for Fat Reduction & Body Contouring
What can this treatment possibly do?
Cryolipolysis fat freezing is a nonsurgical technique for localized fat reduction.
Common treatment areas included the abdomen, brassiere rolls, lumbar rolls, hip rolls/flanks, inner thighs, medial knee, peritrochanteric areas, arms, and ankles.
With the increased risk of complications from invasive methods such as liposuction, cryolipolysis fat freezing presents a promising method for nonsurgical body contouring.
What medical technology or device does this treatment utilise and how it is done?
Cryolipolysis fat freezing is based in the principle that that lipid-rich tissues (fat cells) are susceptible to cold injury compared to the surrounding water-rich tissue (non-fat cell).
The temperatures induced in cryolipolysis have no permanent effect on the overlying dermis and epidermis. However, this cold ischemic injury may promote cellular injury in fat cell (adipose) tissue via cellular edema.
Cryolipolysis fat freezing is performed by applying an applicator to the targeted area set at a specific cooling temperature for a preset period of time. This targets fat cells (adipocytes) while sparing the skin, nerves, vessels, and muscles.
Although its mechanism is not fully understood, it is believed that vacuum suction with regulated heat extraction impedes blood flow and induces crystallization of the targeted fat cell (adipose) tissue when cryolipolysis is performed.
Accurate application of cold temperatures triggers the death of fat cells (adipocytes) that are subsequently engulfed and digested by the white blood cells (macrophages). No changes in subcutaneous fat are noticeable right after treatment. An inflammatory process stimulated by the death of fat cells, as reflected by an influx of inflammatory cells, can be seen within 3 days after treatment and peaks at approximately 14 days thereafter as the fat cells become surrounded by histiocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and other mononuclear cells. At 14–30 days after treatment, macrophages (white blood cells) and other phagocytes surround, envelope, and digest the lipid (fat) cells as part of the body’s natural response to injury.
Four weeks after treatment, the inflammation lessens and the fat cell volume is decreased. Two to three months after treatment, the interlobular septa are distinctly thickened and the inflammatory process further decreases. By this time, the fat volume in the treated area is apparently decreased and the septae account for the majority of the tissue volume.

Eventually, crystallization and cold ischemic injury of the targeted fat cell (adipocytes) induce the fat cells to die, and a pronounced inflammatory response, resulting in their eventual removal from the treatment site within the following several weeks. Studies show that within 3 months, White blood cell (macrophages) are responsible for clearing the damaged cells and debris
What are the likely results? Any side effects or downtime?
Cryolipolysis fat freezing is a promising procedure for nonsurgical fat reduction and body contouring and presents a compelling alternative to liposuction and other invasive methods. This procedure appears to be safe in the short term, with a limited side effect profile, and results in significant fat reduction when used for localized adiposities.
Follow-up length generally ranged from 2 to 6 months, although one study presented case reports on two patients at 2 and 5 years after treatment, noting persistent reduction at these time points when comparing pre-treatment and posttreatment photographs.
Majority of studies that evaluated clinical outcomes of cryolipolysis fat freezing measures noted a significant reduction in fat volume in treatment areas. One study published involving ten subjects reported a good reduction in the fat layer 2 months and 6 months after treatment, respectively.
With the removal of the fat cell (adipocytes) internally, there has been concern that cryolipolysis may cause rising blood lipid levels and elevations in liver enzymes that may put the patient at additional risk, particularly for cardiovascular parameters. However, multiple studies have demonstrated that cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, aspartate transaminase / alanine transaminase, total bilirubin, albumin, and glucose remained within normal limits during and after the cryolipolysis fat freezing treatment.
Common side effects after cryolipolysis fat freezing included erythema, bruising, swelling, sensitivity, and slight pain. These side effects are generally resolved within a few weeks after treatment.

The reduction of the fat layer may then give rise of loose skin at the treated area. Should loose skin be detected at the treated area, body skin tightening by radiofrequency via our Exilis system can be used for the body skin tightening.
