What can this treatment possibly do?
This treatment uses the Exilis system which applies both radiofrequency energy as well as infrared light wavelengths in combination to treat and reduce cellulite noninvasively.
Cellulite formation has a complex pathophysiology that includes expansion of subcutaneous fat, fibrotic dermal septae, as well as dermal laxity and atrophy.
It is thought that in cellulite the fat (adipose) cells are arranged in chambers surrounded by bands of connective tissue called septae, which span to connect muscle to the inferior portion of the dermis. The fat (adipose) cells that are encased within the perimeters of this area expand with water absorption, thereby stretching the connective tissue.
This connective tissue can contract and thicken, holding the skin at a nonflexible length, while the surrounding tissue continues to expand with weight, or water gain. This expansion results in skin dimpling and an orange peel appearance, mainly in the pelvis, thighs, and abdominal areas.
What medical technology or device does this treatment utilise and how it is done?
The Exilis system combines infrared light wavelengths, bipolar Radiofrequency energy, suction, and massage to treat cellulite non-invasively. The infrared light spectrum ranges from 680 to 1500 nm and can possibly penetrate up to 5 mm below the skin.
1210-nm and 1720-nm wavelengths are selectively absorbed by fat (adipose) cells and from this concluded that wavelengths in the infrared spectrum can be used for selective photothermolysis of fat.
Radiofrequency is postulated to target the connective tissue septa and fat whereas the infrared light induces dissociation of oxyhemoglobin into oxygen and hemoglobin, which allows the oxygen to be readily available for fat metabolism and coupled with suction and massage, improves circulation and stretches connective tissue surrounding fat (adipose) collections.
What are the likely results? Any side effects or downtime?
A majority of patients will likely see an improvement in the appearance of their cellulite 1 month after the completion of treatment. Repeated treatments may be required to see prolonged results.
Some redness and mild swelling may be seen after treatment, which goes away after a couple of days.
