What can this treatment possibly do?
The Exilis Radiofrequency system delivers radiofrequency energy to contour and tighten body skin. The use and potential of radiofrequency energy for tissue contracture and body contouring has been proven in the literature.
Maximum reduction of laxity can be achieved by simultaneously tightening surface tissue and reducing unwanted fat below by the transdermal application of heat to reach and maintain tissue temperature targets within a well-defined range, inducing collagen remodelling in skin as well as apoptosis of fat cells and creating an overall slimming effect.
What medical technology or device does this treatment utilise and how it is done?
We use the Exilis system, which is a Radiofrequency (RF) dynamic monopolar device that combines focused monopolar RF delivery with a number of built-in safety features, including Peltier cooling.
The goal of treatment is to raise the surface temperature to 40-42°C for 4-5 minutes for each region treated. When this temperature is reached, the patient feels a comfortably warm sensation.
The handpiece is in continuous motion so the areas of skin with laxity can be specifically targeted. The primary advantage of the Exilis system is the ability to target skin laxity (saggy skin) or contour deformities. An accurate depth of penetration combined with the focused thermal effect due to controlled cooling allows both total body and full-face applications.
The medical use of RF is based on an oscillating electrical current that forces collisions between charged molecules and ions, which are then transformed into heat. RF technology also has the ability to non-invasively and selectively heat large volumes of subcutaneous adipose (fat) tissue.
The dermis is composed of collagen, elastin, and ground substances. RF mediated thermal stimulation of this matrix results in a change in the helical structure of collagen. It is believed that RF thermal stimulation results in a microinflammatory stimulation of fibroblasts, which produces freshly minted collagen (neocollagenesis) and fresh elastin (neoelastogenesis), as well as other substances to enhance dermal structure.
RF thermal stimulation of adipose (fat) tissue is believed to result in a thermal-mediated stimulation of adipocyte metabolism (destruction of fat cell).
What are the likely results? Any side effects or downtime?
A reduction in skin laxity/ sagging (skin tightening), reduction in fine lines / wrinkles, and reduction in the severity of global photodamage may be seen.

The Exilis system gives consistent thermal regulation and output control, maximizing therapeutic delivery of RF energy to the target tissue without overtreating and focal pain. Theoretically, this allows physicians to treat deposits of unwanted fat and simultaneously tighten the surface skin above to create an enhanced result.
The heating of the skin promotes immediate collagen contraction and stimulation of the production of freshly produced collagen (neocollagenesis) with renewed elasticity, as well as long term stimulation of freshly produced elastin (neocollagenesis) producing a tightening effect. Beneath the skin, the effect on fatty tissue is theoretically substantial. Destruction of fat cells (apoptosis of adipocytes) occurs and, over time, released fat is metabolized and cellular debris is eliminated via the body’s natural processes. The two concurrent effects provide a visible slimming, tightening effect.
These clinical results can all be possibly achieved without much pain and downtime.
