Understanding Results, Downtime and Treatment Risk
General educational information • Physician-reviewed clinic resource
Aesthetic treatment outcomes vary. A balanced decision considers the expected degree and duration of change, recovery, maintenance, alternatives and both common and uncommon complications.
Results are not guarantees
Marketing images and another person’s experience cannot predict an individual result. Anatomy, skin, health, product, device, technique and healing all matter.
Downtime is treatment-specific
Redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness, crusting, sensitivity or activity limits may occur. Some complications develop after the initial recovery period.
Know the warning signs
Urgent symptoms depend on the treatment. Severe or increasing pain, pale or mottled skin, visual or neurological symptoms, breathing or swallowing difficulty, fever or rapidly worsening swelling require prompt medical attention.
Frequently asked questions
Does no downtime mean no risk?
No. A treatment can have little expected downtime but still carry uncommon or serious risks.
Are results permanent?
Many aesthetic effects are temporary or may change with ageing, weight, hormones, sun exposure and individual biology.
Why can session numbers change?
Response and recovery are reviewed over time. A fixed course may become unsuitable or unnecessary.
What is informed consent?
It is a discussion of the proposed treatment, material risks, alternatives, limitations and the option not to proceed before a voluntary decision.
