What is hyperpigmentation (brown spots)? Why does it happen?

Almost everyone has a few obvious brown spots here and there on their skin. It may be on one’s face, hands, or back. The common name for pigmentation or hyperpigmentation are freckles, age spots, liver spots, brown spots, to name a few. Some of these spots are quite obvious, and can affect how you look.

Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase of melanin (pigment) in the skin, which is the substance that is responsible for skin colour. Sun exposure is a major culprit for darkening of the skin and increased pigmentation.
Therefore, in sunny Singapore, problems of hyperpigmentation are common and come as no surprise. That is why you should always wear your sunscreen when you are outdoors.

In summary, the spot on your skin appears darker (hyper-pigmented), because melanin is abnormally concentrated in that spot of the skin.

It is a Myth that brown spots or freckles cannot be treated because it is genetic. The Reality is that hyperpigmentation is unsightly and can be medically treated.* If treatment is not sought, the brown spot or freckles may get darker, bigger, and more pronounced.
Melasma

Melasma is the medical term for one of the most common conditions of hyperpigmentation. It is characterized by tan or brown patches on the face, especially on the cheeks and forehead and on the right side of the face for people who drive, where sun exposure is greatest. It is the most difficult pigmentation to treat but it is still possible to improve or lighten it. Gentle treatment is necessary and we also combine with a medicated whitening cream. Compliance may see significant lightening within 10 sessions of treatment.

This condition, however, tends to recur and regular maintenance laser is necessary to keep it from returning.

Freckles / Sun spots

Freckles are small brown spots found in lighter skinned people. Age spots (solar lentiges) are brown or gray discolorations that usually appear on sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands, and back.
Whether it’s freckles, melasma or sun spots, we have the solution for you.*

How do Lasers work on pigmentation?

In a nutshell, laser energy produces a specific wavelength which is absorbed by the brown spot (pigmentation) with abnormal concentrations of melanin. As the pigmentation absorbs more laser energy, the brown spot will reach a point where it cannot absorb any more light and will “self destruct”, reducing the concentration of melanin in that area. The end result is that the pigmented spot will definitely look lighter.

Side Effects

There is generally no downtime with laser treatment to remove pigmentation, save for minimal redness for a few hours. However, in certain sun spots, we may be able to crust them off such that they turn brown peel off in a few days before lightening significantly. In that case, the actual spots may look darker for a few days before they lighten or completely go away.
